Sequential three-step process for the treatment of slaughter house wastewater and its optimization using response surface modeling studies

Abstract The rapid growth in the world population and fast developing industrialization have resulted acceleration of environmental pollution due to inadequate treatment methods accompanied by depletion freshwater. current research focused on batch slaughter house wastewater (SWW) using sequential three-step electro-coagulation (EC)–electro-oxidation (EO)–adsorption column (AC) processes compare optimized values with Omani National Standards for application irrigation purpose. characterization SWW before after was carried out measuring chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), dissolved solids (TDS), turbidity, ammoniacal nitrogen (NH 4 –N) conductivity. optimization performed response surface methodology (RSM) central composite design. maximum obtained EC unit 99% an operating cost 2.78 USD/m 3 . optimum conditions method were found be 4.0 pH, electrolysis time 30 min electrolyte dosage 5 g/L, a density 18.11 mA/cm 2 reduction COD 97% 0.32 EO 84.5% 6.87 process parameters observed at 5.0 56.22 g/L shows 56.27% 0.088 study demonstrates that both significant effect density. Using adsorption studies, 76.8% negligible cost. pH case AC 7.5, effluent flow rate 8.63 mL/min, responses 76.067%, which indicates % removal COD.
